Here are pics of our presenters. We had wonderful salads and a fun time - and even learned a thing or two! :)
Judy talked about some gardening basics and gave us some great tips for keeping a garden.
- when growing melons, stick a flat rock on the underside so it can warm it during the evening hours
- water your garden early in the morning or in the evening - if you do it in the middle of the day, you are just steaming your garden
- plant marigolds alongside your tomato plants - they keep bugs away
- mulch in between rows to cut down on weeding
- mix a packet of morning glories, 4 o'clocks and moon flowers for blooms at all hours
- start out squash, pumpkin, cucumbers in a "jiffy pot"
- can't grow something great, support local farmers - go to produce auctions
- veggies that "give you gas" plant away from other plants, they need their own space
- put vaseline on the top part of a leaf to keep bugs from eating it
- place human hair clippings around the perimeter of your garden to ward off unwanted critters
Megan talked about gardening with kids and gave some fun ideas to get your kids (or kid at heart) involved.
Don't you want to go plant something? a caterpillar??- get kids involved in every part of gardening - from planning to harvesting
- plant things that children can easily pick (i.e. strawberries, green beans, cherry tomatoes)
- have fun, get dirty, learn about bugs and other crawly things
- don't worry about perfectly straight rows!
- plant a pizza garden (Judy mentioned this, but it would be great for kids!)
- do not use chemicals when gardening with children
- let kids decorate a milk jug for a cheap watering can
Thank you to Eloise for putting together her first Enrichment meeting =)
what did YOU learn?
